Abrams Reporting Fellow, ProPublica

July 2021 - Sept. 2023

  • Spent 18 months reporting on Columbia University’s decades-long cover-up of sexual abuse by an OB-GYN. The story, also published as a podcast, resulted in student protests and a campaign to hold Columbia accountable.

  • Reported on the lack of transparency around federal COVID-19 funding; felony disenfranchisement among communities of color during the 2022 election; and Instagram scams, resulting in Meta disabling hundreds of fraudulent accounts.

  • Did media appearances on MSNBC, Democracy Now!, Cheddar and other national and local shows to promote published work.


Research Fellow, Documenting COVID-19

February - July 2021

  • Used public records to report on how local health agencies were responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stories published in CalMatters, Detroit Free Press, the Fresno Bee.


Investigative Fellow, Columbia Journalism Investigations

Sept. 2020 - Feb. 2021

  • Pitched the story that became the focus of a seven-part investigation, produced by an international consortium of journalists, about the criminal networks facilitating illegal timber trafficking in the Amazon rainforest.

  • Developed sources, tracked trade data, filed public records requests, examined Peruvian forestry documents and backgrounded importers and exporters.


Reporting Fellow, Pulitzer Center

Sept. 2020 - March 2022

  • Reported on the environmental and health impacts of Florida’s phosphate mining industry. The story was published by Undark Magazine in March 2022.

  • Helped produce the weekly live-streaming news program “Brian Ross Investigates.” Responsibilities included booking guests, conducting screening interviews, writing articles for the website, fact-checking and managing social media accounts.

  • Produced long-form stories for TV and online. Identified and pre-interviewed sources. Conducted research using Nexis, Pacer, LinkedIn, other databases.


Assistant Project Editor, Since Parkland

Sept. 2018 - March 2019

  • Coached and edited more than 100 teen writers as part of SinceParkland.org, a national youth media project that tracked the youngest victims of gun violence in the first year since the Parkland shooting. The project, a collaboration between The Trace, the Miami Herald and McClatchy, won the 2019 Global Youth & News Media Award as well as ONA’s Pro-Am Student Journalism prize.


County Government Reporter, The Chronicle

Feb. - May 2013

  • Covered government and politics, including the Washington State Legislature, the passage of the same-sex marriage referendum, and interviewed both gubernatorial candidates that year.

  • Beats also included county and city government, transportation, health and local economic development. Broke a story about a longtime city councilman who owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in water bills, property taxes and code violations, leading to the mobilization of the community and an effort to oust the councilman.

  • Stories were also published in the Seattle Times, The Spokesman Review, The Olympian and other publications.

  • Assisted investigative reporter Wayne Barrett, best known for his time at the Village Voice, investigate and prepare interviews for high-profile subjects.
